FNC Rules
An APA is not exactly like a fanzine, and has a few particular rules to follow to be best enjoyed.
To join:
- Send a representative sample of creative work to both editors by regular mail. Contact the editors at fnc.editors on gmail point com to advise that the submission is coming, or if you have any questions.
(It gauges applicants' willingness to make an actual effort as a member.)
- If there are no more member slots left open, accepted applicants will be put on a waitlist and kept apprised of their status.
- Members must be at least 18 years to join. (See 'Rating' for details.)
- Send money to the Treasurer to keep a positive balance account.
(Emails will be sent when money is getting low.)
Subject:
- The purpose of FNC is to encourage creation and discussion of anthropomorphic animals, as well as critique and offer artistic feedback.
- (The thought necessary in reading and thinking on comments over months and not minutes is
what separates a paper APA from a fleeting online discussion group.)
Rating:
- Material from G to R is accepted. X-rated material is not. If in doubt, check with editors before sending your trib.
- (There are a few reasons. We wish to respect postal and customs regulations and not be arrested. We also believe plenty of grown-up situations can be addressed without explicitness, from comedy to drama in all rating areas permitted above.)
Deadlines:
- 2nd or 3rd weekend of March, June, September and December.
(Around the 10th, but specific dates will be emailed in advance.)
- Send all paper tribs to the Production Manager in Toronto. Do not use Signature Required options, as it will delay pickup by 2 to 3 days!
- Electronic tribs, until further notice, should be sent to the Treasurer's email with an attachment or a link to download.
- Avoid word processing-native documents (Word .doc, Wordperfect) if possible. PDFs are preferred as they keep all formatting. Make sure to Embed All Fonts; if you’re not sure, email the fonts along with the document. If you must send a Word file, make sure to send it to the Treasurer at least a week in advance for conversion.
- Please email both Editors in advance if you will send your trib within 2 days of deadline! The Treasurer may no longer be able to print it. We can better coordinate your options.
Tribs (contributions) are inserted in the APA in the order they are received. To ensure reception by deadline, it is recommended to post tribs one week ahead for Canadians and two weeks ahead for all other members.
Copy count:
- Currently set at 20 copies; any increase will be emailed ahead of time.
(Maximum # of members is 38 and copies is 40, for logistical reasons.)
- Please have double-sided copies, with an inside margin of 3/4" or 1". (No one likes to have stuff hidden in the stapled area!)
- Collate but do not bind - no staples or paperclips please! We'll seperate it.
- If making your own copies, keep in mind you aren't limited to white paper.
- We offer a copy-at-destination service for International members, electronic tribs and others who don't have access to good equipment. This costs from 3 to 5 cents (+14% tax) per copy, taken from the member's account. If sending paper, send one set of single-sided pages.
MinAc:
- Minimum Activity is 3 pages of creative material in 2 consecutive issues.
(An APA is meant to be participative, not passive.)
- Comments don’t count for minac, but are heavily encouraged as they are the heart of any APA.
Covers:
- Covers count as a full contribution. If at all possible, we would like to have covers a month in advance ensure that we do have covers. We encourage people to take a spot many issues in advance and submit it one issue early, with their regular contribution!
MaxAc:
- 50 pages, though more of a guideline than a hard rule. (It can unbalance an issue and make it a slog to read, but ask in advance)
Franks:
- We welcome 'franked' items (guests, newspaper articles, etc submitted through a member's trib) but don’t count them towards minac.
